9 great tools for generating content ideas

Getting tired, burned out and downright jaded is par for the course when you spend your waking hours trying to be creative.

And whether you’re a content marketer, feature writer, blogger or social media consultant, there will be times when you need a little help. That’s where online content generators can be handy.

Here are 9 to tap when you need to do a brainstorm and get those creative juices firing once more.

BlogAbout A really nifty brainstorming tool that works in two ways – giving you singular words as inspo, or fill-in-the-blank headlines. It also offers a handy ‘doodle page’ for those of us dealing with writer’s block. Want your ideas emailed to you? It’ll do that, too.

Fat Joe  Need to write a story about making moose curry? Plug it into Fat Joe’s blog post title idea generator and it’ll present you with a heap of ‘click-sexy blog title ideas’ such as ‘Why people love to hate moose curry’, ‘The most innovative things happening with moose curry’ and ’15 undeniable reasons to love moose curry’.

Portent’s Content Idea Generator Put in your keyword, and out spits a headline that may or may not be relevant. This is good fun and occasionally helpful tool for content writers.

Soolve Type in a few keywords and this no-frills aggregator will give you a few columns of related search topics.

Hubspot’s Blog Topic Generator Enter three nouns and this generator will spit out five blog post headline ideas. Some are useless, but if you’ve got writer’s block it can sometimes be a handy jumping off point.

Answer the Public If you do a lot of content marketing you’ll know how hard it is to come up with ideas that engage and convert – there’s a lot of competition out there. This tool enables you to see, visually, what people are searching for which helps you plan your content accordingly.

Ubersuggest Another free idea generator that will generate ideas based on keywords you enter.

I Need A Prompt A site for authors struggling with actually getting started, I Need A Prompt will throw such gems as “An outgoing and talkative knight who is writing a poem about a detective” and “A smug and large British Queen who is in an a cappella group with an elementary school teacher” your way. Helpful? Depends entirely on the book you’re writing.

Fake Word Generator I know, I know, your journalism teacher told you to never make up your own words. But if you’re looking for a cool made-up word for a product, a brand, a company, a book or a character you’re writing, this site could help.

Ever used an idea generator? Which ones have we missed?

Think of it as just a little help from your [content] friends, Heather 🙂 You’ll still need your brain, promise! hehe.

We'd love to hear your thoughts...
