ASK US WEDNESDAY: “Where can freelancers work from when they want to get out of the house?”

Hi there. I’m new to freelancing and not really that productive in my home office (yet) as I think I’m used to the hubbub of an office. Can you suggest some good places to work around Sydney? I don’t mind paying if it means a change of scenery and maybe a bit of a buzz. Alison

Absolutely. The beauty of being freelance is you really can work in a different place every day if you fancy it. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Green Square Library

Libraries.

I wrote a post a while ago about my five favourite Sydney libraries to work in, but there are so many more than these! In fact, the new Green Square Library just opened and it looks amazing. Definitely one to check out if that’s anywhere near you or convenient to get to.

Co-working spaces. WeWork

Here’s a post we wrote about WeWork in Pyrmont (they have other offices around Sydney, too). You could also try Bustle Studios in Surry Hills or check this post for all the other co-working spaces and hubs around the city.

Where can freelancers work

Cafes + restaurants.

While some like to hustle you out the door to free up tables, others are quite happy for freelancers to set up shop as long as they order coffee and food and don’t take up huge tables that could suit groups. They key is finding a good one that you’re comfortable in. I love Bread and Circus in Alexandria with its chunky, rustic tables and booths (and yummy food) and I hear (but haven’t tried) that Ampersand in Paddington and The Rising Sun Workshop cafe in Newtown are also great for this purpose.

A friend’s place.Where can freelancers work

Even better if your friend is freelance, works from home and doesn’t mind sharing his or her wifi. But if you’re pet-free and don’t mind animals, you could even suggest you work on a friend’s couch from time to time in exchange for giving their pooch a bit of company and a daytime walk.

Where can freelancers work fromThe gym.

My gym has an area where you can happily set up your laptop and it’s bright, sunny and plays awesome music. There’s even a microwave if you want to bring last night’s leftovers to heat up. Best of all, if you feel the urge to do a workout you can pop your gear in a locker and go work your guns at the same time.

Where do you go and work when you need to get out of the house?
